It is easy to assume that ELL children do not need ‘extra’ support when they enter kindergarten. After all the K program is so play based and language-rich… .and children pick up the language so easily, right?? Wrong !!
Without strategic and explicit language support we would be creating learners with huge face-to-face fluency in English AND equally large gaps in their more academic language development. Explaining this to parents is another matter and this blog by two Kindergarten teachers in West Vancouver has done a great job of outlining the key issues. The blog also has some great ideas, tips and resources for those working with young learners. Enjoy the blog here.
